The Juniper Trust
- Leaving more than just footprints
KE has worked closely with the Juniper Trust since 1994 and together we have a very successful record of locating and carrying out sustainable community projects in the areas that we visit.
Community Project
A key element to consider during the planning stages of a school expedition is whether you would like to incorporate a community project as one of the group's objectives. This would be something for the group to put their energies into, both prior to departure and for some of the time whilst away. Many KE school groups have included an element of fund-raising within the preparations for their trip, or they have carried out some project work as a part of their travel itinerary. Through liaison with our local agents and KE's partner charity the Juniper Trust we can help you to find an appropriate and deserving objective for this project work and can adjust your trip itinerary accordingly. To make a positive contribution to the area that you visit will add considerably to the sense of achievement and to the satisfaction derived from your school group adventure.
Some examples of ongoing Juniper Trust projects that need help are:
Peru Solar Light Project - KE leader and agent, Val Pitkethly has single handily been the driving force that has seen individual solar lanterns installed in over 1000 households in remote villages across northern Peru. Once again, we have been able to support the project with a £5000 donation to install Solar Lanterns to three villages in the Cordillera Huayhuash. In 2008, Ipswich School raised funds towards the lanterns and visited the project whilst on a Huayhuash Trek with KE.
Chobar School is a thriving centre of education for Helpless Children in Nepal’s Kathmandu Valley and occupies a quiet hillside location overlooking the city. The education for the pupils is free and the pupils are hand picked, many being orphans or from very deprived backgrounds. Jersey College is currently helping to raise £3000 to install a new water tank at Chobar School in Nepal. Work is expected to begin soon and should be completed in time for the colleges visit Nepal in October 2009.
Island School is located in Ol Maisor, a small village beneath Mount Kenya. Jo Richardson Community School have raised £4000 to help build three new concrete classrooms to replace existing mud hut classrooms, which were badly in need of repair. The Juniper Trust has matched the money raised by Jo Richardson Community School and we look forward to seeing this project completed by the end of September 2009.

Cultural Exchange
The mountain views, waterfalls and rugged scenery are guaranteed to be spectacular, but so often on these trips it is the people you meet who provide the longest-lasting memories. To enhance the interaction between your pupils and local people, we can incorporate into your itinerary a visit to a local school for a game of football or a musical performance or other workshop. Any organised exchange of gifts and skills at local schools or orphanages will provide a valuable experience for everyone involved.
