Three types of biking holiday
Our biking holidays are separated into 3 types, based on the terrain and the type of bike and tyres required.
These are our most technically demanding mountain bike holidays, generally on singletrack, dirt roads and jeep tracks, with the vehicle support not always able to follow the riders. A hardtail mountain bike with suspension forks, or a full suspension cross-country bike is required. As the name suggests, knobbly off-road tyres are also needed. Most trips involve a journey such as Morocco's Atlas Traverse Trip or the Pokhara to Kathmandu mountain bike ride in Nepal. However, some of these mountain biking holidays have more of a day-ride format from a single base or a number of bases, like Guatemala's Ride on the Wild Side.
These mountain bike holidays are almost always journeys, some of them extreme in length, such as the 950 kilometre (600 mile) Lhasa to Kathmandu mountain bike ride across the Himalayas. A support vehicle will follow the group on almost all sections of the ride. A mountain bike (usually either a hardtail or a lightweight full suspension model) fitted with semi-slick tyres is ideal for these cycling holidays.
These cycling holidays are all classic road journeys, requiring a road bike or a standard touring bike, fitted either with a compact or a triple chainset. A support vehicle will accompany the biking group and carry all baggage. Our collection of road cycling holidays include some epic journeys such as the 'Route des Grand Alps' - Geneva to Nice cycle tour and our 'Pyrenees Raid' cycling via Tour de France Cols.
