North of the lakeside town of Pokhara, the Annapurna Himalayas is a justifiably popular trekking destination. Rising above picturesque lowland valleys, the mountain scenery of this area is truly spectacular and includes the beautiful 'fish tail' peak of Machhapuchhre. The highest summit of the range is Annapurna 1, , which was the first of the world's 8000 metre peaks to be climbed, by Maurice Hertzog's 1950 expedition. At the heart of the range is the Annapurna Sanctuary a high and almost completely enclosed valley first explored by Colonel Jimmy Roberts as recently 1956. The basecamp
for several of the mountains in the range is close to our highest camp in the sanctuary. The Annapurna Massif is defined by the two great valleys of the Marsyangdi and the Kali Gandaki rivers which cut through the Himalayan Chain to the east and west, respectively
Offering relatively easy trekking conditions on excellent trails which are well-served with tea-houses and lodges, this part of Nepal makes an excellent choice for a first trek in the Himalayas.
One element that should not be underestimated however, is the altitude you will reach during your Annapurna trek. The key to trekking at altitude is careful pacing and plenty of time to acclimatise. With more than twenty three years' experience of organising Himalayan treks you can be sure that KE's Annapurna Sanctuary and Annapurna Circuit treks allow optimum acclimatisation - with some days spent either resting or walking for just a few hours.
