Due south of Everest, the Hinku and Hongu valleys are linked at the high pass of the Mera La (5415m / 17,767ft). A straightforward snow slope climb leads from this pass to the summit of Mera Peak (6476m / 21,240ft), one of Nepal's highest trekking peaks. Views from the summit of Mera Peak take in 5 of the world's 8000 metre peaks, including Mount Everest. Close to the main Everest trek and accessed by way of an exciting flight to the airstrip at Lukla, the trek in to the mountain leads through the quiet Hinku valley to a base camp at Khare. One of more than 30 trekking peaks listed by the Nepalese Mountaineering Association, the key to the appeal of Mera Peak climb is its accessibility. The Mera Peak trek and climb is an obvious choice for any fit and keen hiker wanting to take part in a real Himalayan climbing expedition.
One of the most significant considerations when attempting to climb Mera Peak is the mountain’s great height. The key to climbing at altitude is careful pacing and plenty of time to acclimatise. With more than twenty three years’ experience of organising Himalayan trekking and climbing holidays, you can be sure that KE’s Nepalese climbing trips have been designed to allow optimum acclimatisation - with rest days and shorter days built into the trek itineraries.
