At more than 17 million square kilometres, Russia is the largest country in the world, covering more than an eighth of the earth's land area. It extends across much of Europe and the whole of northern Asia, spanning 11 time zones and incorporating a great range of environments and landforms. The opportunities for adventure travel here are innumerable and largely untapped - something for the future! However, some areas are opening up and these include the region around Lake Baikal in southern Siberia. This vast lake is the world's deepest and proves to be a brilliant trekking destination in summer and a fascinating place to visit in the winter, when its surface is sufficiently well frozen to allow trucks to cross it. Another of Russia's most outlandish adventure destinations is the far east peninsula of Kamchatka, a volcanic hot spot and veritable 'Land of Fire and Ice'. Trekking, wilderness exploration and volcano climbing are all part of Kamchatka's appeal.
