Essaouira is Moroccos most favoured coastal town and only 2.5 hours drive from Marrakech. A busy fishing port, Essaouira is renowned for its laid-back atmosphere and well-established art scene. It is also a worldwide centre for wind and kite surfing. Cooler than Marrakech in the summer, Essaouira boasts endless wide sandy beaches, vibrant cafes and restaurants and great souks. The old, white-painted fort and walled medina, together with its colourful harbour and fish market are perfectly picturesque. It is an ideal place to chill out after trekking in the mountains.

Rabat is the current holder and the oldest is Fez, first established as capital in the 9th century under Sultan Idriss II, a great-great grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. The Almohads took control in the 12th century and built a new city, Rabat, as their capital. This was replaced, during the rule of Morocco's notorious sultan, Moulay Ismael, by Meknes and Rabat again became capital under the French protectorate, which began in 1912.

The Saadian Tombs, built in the 16th Century for Sultan Ahmed el Mansour were re-discovered in 1917 and they are lavish, breathtaking and beautiful with detailed woodwork and a garden alive with rich fragrances of rosemary and roses. Bahia Palace is an excellent example of Islamic and Moroccan architecture from the 19th century. The 160 rooms include tiled floors, arches and carved ceilings, many rooms open into the courtyard and it is all set in some 2 acres of gardens. Founded in the 14th century the Islamic school of Ben Youssef Madersa was one of the largest theological colleges in North Africa and housed as many as 900 students. The carvings and inscriptions are quite fascinating - a super end to this half-day tour. Please note that museums are closed on Tuesdays.

First, we take a look at the city walls that surround the Medina, the old part of the city. Dating back to around 1120, these were constructed from mud, straw and lime. We then travel away from the bustle of Marrakech to the Menara Gardens, an oasis of peace with their formal pool and pavilion, established in the 12th century. Passing through the Palmeraie, we return to Marrakech to visit the Majorelle Gardens. These vibrant gardens, with their important selection of plants and powerful blue-painted walls and buildings are quite unlike anything you will find elsewhere. The gardens also house the Islamic Art Museum which has paintings by Yves Saint Laurent, as well as Jacques Majorelle. Please note that museums are closed on Tuesdays.

With the majority of our Moroccan holidays operating in the High Atlas Mountains and the desert and mountainous regions of the South, extending your trip to visit Northern Morocco and the Rif mountains is well worth considering. Highlights include the historical towns of Fes, Rabat and Tangiers, the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis and the isolated town of Chefchouan in the heart of Rif Mountains. Nestled beneath two mountain peaks known as Ech-Chaoua (the horns) the blue-rinsed houses and buildings of Chefchouan and the surrounding area with its waterfalls, trees and flowers is simply idyllic.

No holiday to Morocco is complete without a visit to the spectacular mountains of the High Atlas. The Atlas range extends for 2400 km through Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, and the highest peak, Jebel Toubkal at 4167 metres is an easy transfer away from Marrakech. In contrast to the traditional Berber villages and mountain scenery of the Atlas, Essaourira on the coast reveals a different side of Morocco with its superb sandy beach and whitewashed walled medina. The fortified harbour is a hive of activity with fishing nets laid out on the quayside and stalls serving freshly grilled seafood.
