Located centrally in the Balkan region, between Greece, Serbia, Kosovo, Albania and Bulgaria, Macedonia is heaven for mountain adventure lovers. More than 80% of the country is mountaineous terrain, with more than 15 peaks higher than 2000 metres, and Golem Korab (2764m) in Mavrovo National Park being one of the highest in Eastern Europe. Between the mountains there is abundance of pristine lakes and rivers, among which the most famous is the Lake Ohrid, a UNESCO world natural and cultural heritage site.
Macedonia`s time zone is GMT + 1hr. They do have DST (Daylight Saving Time) in the summer.
In Macedonia they speak Macedonian (which belongs to the south Slavic language group). Most of the population of the country is able to communicate easily in English (it is learned at school), so getting around is easy.
It is possible to visit Macedonia anytime of the year. The country has a mildly continental climate, characterised by relatively cold and humid winters and warm and dry summers. The spring is colder than the fall. Average number of sunny days throughout the year is more than 250 and the average temperature is 25 degrees Centigrade.

ATMs are plentiful throughout the country (in urban areas) and banks, authorised bureaux de change, post offices or most hotels will exchange foreign currency. Banks open Monday to Friday. Major credit cards are widely accepted at the main hotels and restaurants, and may be used to draw cash from ATMs.
You will need a passport with minumum 3 months of validity to enter Macedonia. Nationals of the EU, the USA, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia do not require visas to visit Macedonia as tourists. Nationals of other countries should check the visa requirement with the relevant embassy in their own countries.
You should attend your own doctor and dentist for a check-up. No special vaccinations are required.
