Uzbekistan


Geography
Uzbekistan is bordered by Afghanistan to the south, Turkmenistan to the west, Kazakhstan to the north, Kyrgyzstan to the northeast and Tajikistan to the east and has a colourful and varied countryside. The south and east are dominated by the Tien-Shan and Pamir-Alai mountain ranges and the Kyzyl Kum Desert lies to the northeast. The northwestern autonomous region of Karakalpakstan is bordered by the Aral Sea and the sparsely populated Ustyurt Plateau with its vast cotton fields.

Electricity is 220 volts AC, 50Hz. Round two-pin continental plugs are standard.

Language
Uzbek is the main language of Uzbekistan and is spoken by three-quarters of the population. We will also encounter Russian speaking and Tajik speaking people. English is not well understood. We recommend that you take a pocket phrase book and learn some basics such as common greetings.
Climate
In Tashkent and Samarkand, the daytime temperature in April is likely to be between 20 and 25°C. In the Nurata and Zarafshan mountains it will be cooler, with average daytime temperatures of between 15 and 20°C. The lowest nighttime temperature we can expect to encounter in April will be around 10°C. In September, daytime temperatures can be as high as 35°C in Tashkent and Samarkand, and 25°C in the mountains. The weather is usually good throughout the summer, with clear skies and little rain or snow.

Visa Requirements
A passport with at least 6 months remaining validity is required, together with a single-entry Uzbekistan Visa. More detailed information on visas can be found on the website on the trip page for your holiday.
Vaccinations
You should attend your own doctor and dentist for a check-up. Your doctor will have access to the most up to date information on the required vaccinations for the country you are visiting.
