Slovenia

Slovenia declared its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. It is a modern, forward-thinking state, a member of the EU and of NATO, which chose as its national emblem, the triple summited peak of Mount Triglav. Located to the east of the northern end of the Adriatic, Slovenia has borders with Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia. Much of its land area is hilly, with the most impressive range being the Julian Alps, towards the country's northern margin. This impressive mountain group provides all kinds of opportunities for adventure holidays - for trekkers, for mountain bikers and for family groups. The picturesque lakeside town of Bled and the nearby Bohinj Valley are popular places from which to explore the Julian Alps. There is spectacular ridge-top trekking to the beautiful 'Valley of the Seven Lakes' and even to the top of Triglav (2864m / 9397ft) itself. In the winter months, this part of Slovenia is a winter sports location of growing importance and a brilliant place for cross-country skiing on hundreds of kilometres of prepared trails.
