Norway

Trekking holiday in NorwayThe Northern Lights in Norway

Geography

Norway is bordered to the north by the Arctic Ocean, to the east by Finland, Russia and Sweden, to the south by the Skagerrak Sea (which separates it from Demark) and to the west by the North Sea. The coastline is over 25,000km long, its most outstanding feature being the numerous fjords. Most of them are from 80km to 160km long, and are usually flanked by towering mountains. Much of northern Norway lies beyond the Arctic Circle and consequently, mostly takes the form of rugged tundras. The south is covered with pine and larch forests, and dotted with lakes, rivers and mountains.

Language

Norwegian is the official language but Northern Sami, Lule Sami, Kven and Southern Sami are also recognised. English is widely spoken throughout Norway as are Swedish and Danish. It is a good idea and fun to bring a phrasebook or dictionary with you and learn common words and greetings.

Climate

Like neighbouring Finland and Sweden, Norway experiences extreme cold in the winter, particularly in sub polar regions, and gentle heat in the summer, with temperatures hitting around 30°C in the south. Coastal areas enjoy a moderate climate thanks to the tempering effects of the Gulf Stream. Inland temperatures are harsher with hot summers and freezing winters (November to March). The lowlands of the south and the inland mountains generally experience colder winters than the coastal areas. Rainfall is sporadic throughout the year with frequent inland snowfalls during the winter. Northern parts inside the Arctic Circle have continuous daylight in midsummer and twilight all day during winter.

Currency

Norwegian Krone (NOK; symbol Kr) = 100 ore. Notes are in denominations of Kr1,000, 500, 200, 100 and 50. Coins are in denominations of Kr20, 10, 5 and 1.

Visa Requirements

A passport with 3 months remaining validity is required. Visas are not required by holders of passports of the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or any EU countries. Other nationalities should check with the respective consulate in their own country. We do keep our information up to date but be advised visa requirements are subject to change. It is recommended that you contact the relevant commission in the case of recent alterations.

Vaccinations

You should attend your own doctor and dentist for a check-up. No special vaccinations are required for Norway. UK residents should obtain a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before travelling. The EHIC is normally valid for three to five years and covers any medical treatment that becomes necessary during your holiday, because of either illness or an accident. The card gives access to state-provided medical treatment only, and you will be treated on the same basis as an 'insured' person living in the country you're visiting. Remember, this might not cover all the things you'd expect to get free of charge from the NHS in the UK. You may have to make a contribution to the cost of your care. You can obtain an EHIC from the Department of Health by phone, online, or at the post office
