Cambodia

Situated towards the southern end of the Indochina Peninsula and having significant land borders with Thailand (north-west), Laos (north) and Vietnam (east), Cambodia is a magical South-East Asian country. Its troubled past of the Khmer Rouge and ‘Killing Fields' now behind it, Cambodia has experienced a period of sustained economic growth over the last 10 years and its popularity as an adventure travel destination has also boomed. Cambodia has a vibrant ethnic mix, with people of Chinese and Vietnamese descent, as well as more than 30 colourful hill-tribes. 95% of the population are practicing Buddhists and the majority of them make their living from the land. From the perspective of the adventure traveller, the standout attraction of Cambodia is the stunning temple complex at Angkor Wat, built by the King Suryavarman in the 12th century and undoubtedly one of the wonders of the world. The capital, largest city and an important regional centre is Phnom Penh, rebuilt and modernised by the French during their period of colonial rule which began in 1870. It offers a pleasant mix of French colonial buildings, grand boulevards and earlier architectural attractions.
