Japan

Four large islands, Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku (together with 3000 small ones) make up Japan. It lies in the Pacific Ocean, east of China, Russia and Korea and is sometimes referred to as the 'Land of the Rising Sun'. The larger islands are all mountainous, with many volcanoes, including the iconic Mount Fuji (3776m / 12,388ft), the country's highest and most sacred summit. With its generally steep and rugged terrain, space is at a premium in Japan and most of the population centres are concentrated in coastal areas. Beyond these, there is surprising wilderness and lots of opportunity for adventure - try the traditional pastime of sawanobori (ghyll scrambling) or trek to the highest peaks of the Japanese Alps. Culturally, too, Japan is a revelation. No adventurous visitor should miss the opportunity to travel on the 'Bullet Train', attend an outrageous 'Fire Festival', try out the non-aggressive martial art of aikido, hike to the top of Mount Fuji or meet a Geisha girl on the streets of the old town of Kyoto.
