Formerly the British protectorate of Bechuanaland, Botswana adopted its new name on becoming independent in 1966. It is a landlocked nation, with South Africa to the south and south-east, Namibia to the west, Zambia to the north and Zimbabwe to the north-east. Diamond mining and tourism are the twin keys to the success of the country's economy. Much of the country (70%) is taken up by the Kalahari Desert and there are other relatively unproductive areas, like the Makgadikgadi salt pans in the north. However, Botswana also has the incomparable Okavango Delta, the world's largest inland delta. Here, there are several important national parks and reserve areas and some of the best wildlife viewing and safari opportunities in all of Africa. Lion, cheetah, leopard, wild dog, elephant, hippo, rhino, buffalo and many antelope species can all be found. Visitors to the Okavango can quite easily include some time at nearby Victoria Falls on the Zambia- Zimbabwe border.
