Montenegro

Sandwiched between Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo and Albania, Montenegro is a small ‘Balkan' country with a beautiful coastline on the Adriatic. Pretty much the whole of the country is mountainous, with limestone peaks rising above 2000 metres in many locations - the country's biggest peak is Bobotov Kuk (2522m) in the Durmitor National Park. A narrow coastal plain, just a few kilometres in extent, stops abruptly in the north, where rugged mountains plunge into the inlet of the Bay of Kotor. Montenegro's history is far to complex to discuss here, but in recent times it has been a part of the Ottoman Empire and from 1918 it was a part of Yugoslavia, with its independence only being confirmed on 3rd June, 2006. Montenegro is a member of the UN and of the World Trade Organization and is currently a candidate for membership of the European Union. Within this relatively small country, there is tremendous scope for adventure holidays, both on foot and by mountain bike. A national network of 3000 kilometres of hiking and biking trails gives access to a wilderness of high valleys, home to sleepy villages and remote mountain pasture.
