Yes you can actually do this on our Antarctic Cruises! We provide an outstanding opportunity to experience a night camped out on the Antarctic. Fans of Scott and Shakleton and of polar exploration will not want to miss this one! In the quiet majesty of this last truly pristine and wild place you overnight under canvas. The sounds, sights and of course the climate of the Antarctic will all be intensified by spending the night out on the ice. Photo opportunities will be magical. It is essential to book early for this experience as places are limited per cruise.
On the day of the camping expedition dinner will be served onboard - eat heartily as there will be no personal snacks allowed onshore as per IAATO regulations. After dinner you will go by Zodiac to the campsite and after setting up camp for the evening, you will have time to explore the area and enjoy the Antarctic evening. The following morning, wake up time will be about an hour before ship's breakfast, allowing time to collect and stow our equipment before journeying back to the ship by zodiac. Previous camping experience is not necessary, but members of the camping group will be asked to help put up tents under the instruction of the expedition leader. As we are in a ecologically sensitive environment, we ask that members of the group, follow closely the instructions of the expedition leader in order to minimize impacts, and ensure that we at all times, meet and exceed IAATO regulations. Safety is always paramount. Each camping expedition is restricted to a maximum of 20 campers and will be accompanied by a minimum of two experienced Expedition Staff members. Communication with the ship will be maintained throughout the excursion and we carry emergency rations in the event that our schedule becomes extended as a result of weather conditions. Accommodation on the camping expedition is twin-share. Single travellers will be paired with other single travellers of the same sex.

A fantastic opportunity to make a rare repeat of Shackleton's epic journey across South Georgia. This is a self-supported expedition over 2 or 3 days and participants will ski, pulling pulkas carrying all equipment. Accompanied by professional ski mountaineering guides the group will leave the MV Plancius on approximately day 7 of the voyage and we aim to rendezvous with the ship on day 9. The ski trekking involves elements of ski mountaineering, glacier travel and winter camping. The skiers will cover a total distance of 40 km retracing the historic Shackleton route, which he covered in 36 hours.
A group of 12 ski trekkers will pull their own pulka (sledge) weighing approx. 30 - 35 kg, with personal and shared equipment (food, stoves, fuel) in challenging mountainous terrain. The pulka can be carried as a backpack on stretches without snow. In general participants must be physically well conditioned and experienced in order to participate in this strenuous exercise in an alpine environment, possibly facing extreme weather. In addition, ski trekkers must be familiar with skiing and crevasse rescue techniques. The group will negotiate sometimes difficult, glaciated, heavily crevassed and potentially hazardous alpine terrain. There is no real climbing, but the extreme weather conditions and strong winds can make this crossing a very challenging undertaking. There is a possibility that due to stormy weather the expedition members must remain in tents for several days at a time. Fully approved UIAGM mountain and ski guides are responsible for safety and will lead the group during this multiple day expedition. The minimum guide to client ratio is 1 to 4. Basic equipment is available onboard (pulka/sledges, snowshoes, field camp and alpine mountaineering essentials). Ski trekkers need to bring only their own ski equipment (Randonees or Telemark skis, skiing boots) and personal expedition clothing. Prospective participants will need to submit a cv summarising their personal ski mountaineering/trekking history preferably in an expedition setting. Successful applications will then be interviewed. This is a serious undertaking, but if you are fit enough and have a sense of adventure (and endurance) - then this is the ultimate!
