Antarctic Peninsula
The southernmost continent on Earth, Antarctica is located almost entirely to the south of the Antarctic Circle and is surrounded by the Southern Ocean. It is a huge landmass, twice as big as Australia, and covered by ice to an average depth of 1 mile (1.6 km). It is the coldest, driest and windiest continent and, surprisingly, has the highest average elevation of all the continents. There is no permanent settlement on Antarctica, although many countries of the world operate research station here.
Arguably the most interesting part of Antarctica from the perspective of adventure travellers is the Antarctic Peninsula, which reaches north of the Antarctic Circle in the general direction of Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America. This part of the territory can be approached in just a few days by cruise boats out of the world's southernmost city, Ushuaia. Rich in wildlife, including many seabirds (albatrosses and penguins), as well as whales and seals, the Antarctic Peninsula also has fantastic landscapes, combining amazing icebergs and impressive coastal mountains. Antarctica is beyond comprehension and sure to amaze any traveller seeking a true adventure to the world's most remote wilderness.
