Just 10 kms (6 miles) from the precipitous south face of K2 (8611m/28245ft) and nearer still to Broad Peak (8047m/26395ft) and the stupendous Gasherbrum IV (7925m/25995ft), K2 base camp is unquestionably one of the most spectacular camping places on earth. Following generally good trails, our weeklong trek in to this remote area leads from the village of Askole through a veritable wilderness of the Baltoro valley and towering Karakoram peaks. The scenery becomes daily more impressive as we trace a route across the moraines of the vast Baltoro Glacier, overshadowed by the sheer granite walls of the Trango Towers to our left and the shapely summit of Masherbrum (7821m/25650ft.) to the right. Including the option to walk from our camp at Concordia to K2 base camp this universally acclaimed trek is well within the capabilities of keen walkers and hikers.
An alternaive trek K2 base camp is from the Hushe Valley across the Gondoro La (5585m/18320ft.) to Concordia. We travel to the heart of the Karakoram via the Baltistan capital of Skardu and acclimatise in the Masherbrum and Gondoro valleys where we find alpine meadow campsites and range upon range of starkly beautiful rock peaks. From a high camp below the Gondoro La we make an early start for the 35-degree snow-slope climb to a dramatic col, which affords simply unforgettable views of K2 (8611m/28245ft.), Broad Peak (8047m/26395ft.), the Gasherbrums and Chogolisa. Walking out from Concordia, we pass closebeneathMasherbrum and the famous Trango Towers. If you are keen to visit K2 and have some experience of wintermountaineering, then this is the way to go.
