Remote, mysterious and alluring, Mongolia has a great deal to offer to trekking and climbing expeditions. Beyond the vast grassland plains, known as steppes, peopled by nomadic herders and their animals, there are deserts and mountain ranges ripe for exploration. The biggest Mongolian peaks are to be found amongst the Altai Mountains, which run in an almost unbroken chain from the Gobi Desert through the Central Asian republics to the Karakoram in Pakistan. Home to rare and elusive wildlife such as the snow leopard, these stunning snow-capped peaks are at their most impressive in the vicinity of Mount Khuiten. Ulaanbaatar is the capital and starting place for our pair of contrasting adventures; one trek and one climb, which each take place in the far west of the country and require an internal flight to approach them.
The birthplace of Genghis Khan, Mongolia is one of the largest land-locked countries in the world and, with just 2.8 million people, has the smallest population density. Having become accessible to adventure travellers as recently as 1990, with the unravelling of the Soviet Union, it has revealed itself to be well worth waiting for.
Trekking in Mongolia involves straightforward walking at relatively low altitude, on good trails, with baggage camels and full trek support. Our climbing trip in the Mongolian Altai includes straightforward snow slope ascents and steeper rock and ice ridge climbs. Quite apart from the excellent trekking and climbing, any trip to rarely-visited Mongolia promises a fascinating travel experience.
