Discover Machu Picchu in its Centenary Year!
2011 is a special year for Peru as they will be celebrating the centenary of Hiram Bingham's rediscovery of the lost Inca City of Machu Picchu. Over the last 100 years, Machu Picchu has become one of the most famous and iconic attractions in the world. You too can discover the famous citadel of Machu Picchu in 2011, by signing up for one of our amazing treks along the Inca Trails of Peru.
Inca Trail and Permits
As usual, it is vital that you book early for any of our Inca Trail holidays. Permits will become available in February and normally sell out quickly. Demand for permits will be greatest around the time of the centenary celebrations on 7th July. To secure your place on any of our 2011 departures, book now for The Classic Inca Trail, the extended Inca Trail and Beyond or the action-packed Multi Activity Peru.
Centenary Celebrations!
The main centenary celebrations will take place on 7th July at the Inca citadel and will be broadcast live to the world via satellite. There will be a host of special guests, including Peru’s president Alan Garcia, the Peruvian writer and recent Nobel Prize Winner Mario Vargas Llosa and the celebrated Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Florez. The details of the event have yet to be finalised, but it is rumoured that notable celebrities such as Sting, Paul McCartney and Bono have been approached to put in headline appearances!
Alternative 'Inca Trail's' - no permit required!
To avoid any disappointment with permits selling out, why not book a holiday in the Cusco region that does not involve going into the area covered by the Inca Trail Permit. You can still include a visit to Machu Picchu itself and many of KE Adventure Travel's unbeatable selection of Peruvian holidays do just that.
Combining superb trekking and the 2 premier Inca sites Choquequirao and Machu Picchu offers a 'real' alternative to the Inca Trail. For something higher, longer and slightly tougher than the Inca Trail but equally as rewarding our new Quillarumi Trek is the perfect choice. Our brand new Vilcanota and the Sacred Valley for Connoisseurs holiday uses comfortable lodge accommodation and provides an insight into the culture of a rarely visited corner of Peru, whilst for the bikers the Lake Titicaca to Machu Picchu ride is a newly-confirmed classic.
As another option, far from Machu Picchu celebrations and Inca Trail permit issues, our treks in Northern Peru provide arguably the best trekking and climbing in the whole of South America. The Cordillera Huayhuash Trek, setting for ‘Touching the Void' is one of the ‘classic walks in the world', whilst the mountain scenery of our new Cordillera Blanca Traverse rivals anything that can be experienced in the Himalaya.
Improved Flight Connections!
If the centenary year is not reason enough to visit Peru in 2011, better flight connections to Cusco have allowed us to drop the night in Lima at the start of a number of our Peru holidays. Night flights in both directions and checking in your baggage for the whole journey are just 2 of the advantages of this new arrangement.
