Sustainable Tourism

AITO 5 Star Sustainable Tourism AwardEver since we ran our first trip in 1984, we have been committed keeping the world's most beautiful places pristine by minimising our environmental impact.  Recognising the fragility of the world's wilderness environments, we keep our groups small and operate according to a ‘Mountain Code’, which is provided to all groups, trek leaders, agents and staff.  We make sure that our local staff are well treated and well paid, we respect indigenous cultures, take care to protect the environment of the places we visit and take every opportunity to make a positive contribution wherever we travel. Our philosophy of 'leaving nothing but footprints' has been integral to KE's approach right from the start 30 years ago.  In recognition of our efforts we are proud to have achieved the highest award of 5 Stars for Sustainable Tourism by AITO.

Making a Contribution - The Juniper Trust

Social giveback is important to us and over the years, working with our partner charity the Juniper Trust, we have helped build or renovate 8 schools: 4 in Nepal, 2 in Kenya, 1 in India and 1 in Pakistan. As part of a commitment to sustainable energy initiatives the Juniper Trust has also provided 4000 solar-powered lamps for villages in Northern Peru. Installation of the lamps has been the work of ‘Senorita Val' - Val Pitkethly, who is one of our longest-serving tour leaders. Learn more about The Juniper Trust and how to contribute at www.junipertrust.co.uk

Special Project for 2014

To help celebrate 30 years in the adventure business, we are donating £5 to the Juniper Trust Charity for everyone who books a holiday departing in 2014 and in this way hope to raise £22,500 +. We plan to put this towards the excellent "Portage and Rehabilitation Association Nepal". PRAN is a home visiting service for families with children who have additional needs, from birth to school age.  Read more on our Current Projects page

Other Juniper Trust projects will also benefit including another new scheme to set up equipment banks for our porters in the Himalayas, Africa and South America.  Visit the Juniper Trust website for full details on current and historical project work.

The KE Mountain Code

  • PROTECTING the environment - its flora, fauna and landscapes
  • RESPECTING local cultures - traditions, religions and built heritage
  • BENEFITTING local communities - both economically and socially
  • CONSERVING natural resources - from office to destination
  • MINIMISING pollution - through noise, waste disposal and congestion

Minimising Environmental Impact

We make sure our trips have as little impact on the environment as possible.  We use dedicated campgrounds, and ensure toilet & washing facilities do not contaminate water supplies. All litter is removed and recycled where possible. No local wood is used for cooking where deforestation is an issue and we encourage the use of renewable energy resources.

Overseas Partners

KE Adventure works in partnership with numerous overseas agents who provide the services that make our trips possible.  Mostly small family run businesses, they are also dedicated to Sustainable tourism.  KE provides guidance on how to adhere to our Mountain Code and work in partnership to help give something back to the communities.

Local Crews and Porters

Almost all KE trips are supported by a crew of local people. We aim to ensure all porters and crews are provided with adequate equipment for the environment, they are paid fairly and given adequate provision for food and accommodation. We also ensure porters loads are not excessive.

KE's Sustainable Tourism Awards

AITO 5 Star Sustainable Tourism AwardAITO 5 star Sustainable Tourism status
KE has achieved the top (5-star) status within AITO’s Sustainable Tourism award system - on account of our ST policies, the implementation of sustainable office practice, communication with our customers, environmental practice and practical within-destination activity.

In the past we have won the AITO Achievement in Responsible Tourism Award in recognition of our contributions over 30 years and have also been 'Runner-Up' in the same award.  We have also been awarded 'Highly Commended' status in the Best Tour Operator category of the Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards.
