Trek & Climb Ladakh

Beyond the Indian Himalaya and bounded to the north by the peaks of the Karakoram and the vast Tibetan Plateau, lies the isolated Buddhist region of Ladakh. With its maze of interconnecting valleys, linked across high passes, Ladakh and neighbouring Zanskar can boast some of the world’s finest trek and climb itineraries. The ancient town of Leh, which is situated in the Indus valley at an altitude of over 3000 metres, is where most adventures begin. Whether you want to trek to isolated villages and monasteries or climb to the summit of a straightforward snow-capped peak, the mountain ranges of Ladakh have a great deal to offer. Due south of Leh, the Zanskar ranges hide one of the area’s most popular short treks, through the lovely Markha Valley. Here also, clearly visible from Leh, is the shapely peak of Stok Kangri which presents an easy and yet rewarding climb to over 6000 metres. The high plains of the Chang Tang on the border with Tibet are home to more excellent trekking and climbing options as well as a number of surreal lakes, such as Tso Morari.

On the Summit of Stok Kangri Treks in Ladakh follow good trails which have been used for centuries by the local people and their livestock. Even the high passes are clear of snow in the summer months and the trekking is quite straightforward. The area’s generally high altitude is a consideration, however. It is important when trekking or climbing at altitude that plenty of time is allowed for acclimatisation. With more than twenty three years’ experience of organising Himalayan trekking and climbing holidays, you can be sure that KE’s Ladakhi trips have been designed to allow optimum acclimatisation - with rest days and shorter days built into the trek or climb itineraries.
