- Strolling through Chiang Mai’s colourful and bustling night market
- Rafting on the Mae Kong River
This 14 day School Adventure provides you with a stunning introduction to the jewel in the crown of South Asia that is Thailand. From the bustling capital city of Bangkok, we take the overnight train to Chiang Mai in the remote northern highlands. This is a region of forested valleys and extraordinary hilltribes, including the Hmong and Karen people. We visit temples, see elephants at work and enjoy a homestay in a Thai village, before moving on to Um Phang, close to the border with Myanmar. Here, we trek into a landscape of jungleclad crags and amazing multi-tiered waterfalls, with a day of rafting included. A visit to the island of Ko Samet, close to Bangkok, will provide a relaxing finale – on the beach.
Educational Perspective
Thailand’s colourful hilltribes largely continue to follow their traditional ways of life, a fact which makes them particularly interesting from a cultural perspective.
Amend or Extend
There are several short trekking options close to Chiang Mai that could be included. Alternatively, you could add one or more days of community project work to your trip.
Trip Guide
We recommend a minimum age of 15yrs
Whilst this is not a long or extended trekking holiday and the altitudes attained are not significant, the heat, humidity and terrain make the walking quite challenging. There are 4 days which include an element of trekking, which is usually between 4 and 6 hours in duration. We will be following forest trails, farm tracks and dirt roads, with a fair bit of up and down and some slippery jungle underfoot conditions. There will be the opportunity to try riding elephants on Day 10. River rafting (using specialist rubber craft and trained river guides) also forms a part of the trip on 2 days. The rafting is very straightforward. Comprehensive instruction is given by our professional river guides prior to boarding the rafts and full safety equipment is used. There is an optional cycling tour on Day 4. Each of our School Group Adventures is given a grade, taking into account the amount of walking involved, the difficulty of the terrain, the remoteness, the altitude and the overall length of the trip. The trips are graded on a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being the most challenging. This trip is graded 4.
