Book Trip
Schools trekking adventure to Everest Basecamp School expedition to Everest Basecamp, Nepal

  • A School adventure that follows in the footsteps of Hillary and Tenzing
  • Sightseeing in colourful Kathmandu
  • An awe-inspiring trek in the Khumbu
  • Cultural Exchange experience at local school
  • Experienced KE leader, Sherpa guide and full support crew

The Mount Everest National Park has been a popular destination for trekkers and climbers alike, since the very first expeditions to the Nepalese side of Everest in the 1950's. This classic School Adventure trek follows the Everest Trail to Everest Basecamp, amongst the wonderful mountain scenery of the Khumbu. The high point of our trek is at Everest Basecamp, close up beneath the spectacular Khumbu Icefall which leads up to the South Col and was the route taken on the first ascent of Everest. En route, we visit many delightful Sherpa villages, the Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar and the stunningly located Thyangboche, with its famous monastery and impressive backdrop of Everest and Ama Dablam.

Educational perspective

The high valleys on the south side of Everest are home to a race of people known as the Sherpas, who originally came from Tibet. Entrepreneurial and hard working, the Sherpa economy is founded on the work that they do with trekking and climbing groups.

Amend or Extend

A visit to Chitwan National Park, home to elephant, rhino and the elusive tiger, make a contrasting addition to any school trip to the mountains of Nepal.

Trip Guide

We recommend a minimum age of 16 years

Generally, the trekking conditions on this trip are easy, following good paths and yak trails throughout. Additionally, as the Khumbu is Nepal's most popular trekking destination, the area is well supplied with teashops and lodges and the trails between these are well used and present easy walking conditions. This is the classic walk-in to Everest and our 14 days of trekking allow us plenty of time to comfortably complete the itinerary. To ensure that everyone is in good shape on the steady ascent to Everest Basecamp, the itinerary includes an acclimatisation day at Namche Bazaar and a further acclimatisation days at Dingboche. We have included an additional day in this itinerary to allow more time for the group to visit both Kala Patar and Everest Basecamp. This ascent presents no real difficulty and should be within the capabilities of fit and active hill walkers. However, there are a couple of quite long trekking days and it should be noted that trekking at altitudes above 5000 metres is necessarily strenuous. Each of our School Group Adventures is given a grade, taking into account the amount of walking involved, the difficulty of the terrain, the remoteness, the altitude and the overall length of the trip. The trips are graded on a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being the most challenging. This trip is graded 8.
