Book Trip
Chile Lake District, Volcano Trekking Views of Villarica, Chile

  • Volcano trekking in the Chilean Lake District
  • Climb 5 volcanoes
  • Far-reaching views from Volcan Llaima
  • The lakeside resort of Pucon

Sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes, the Chilean Lake District is a gorgeous region of glacially carved lakes, snow-capped volcanoes and stately monkey-puzzle trees. From the town of Temuco, our first objectives are the neighbouring volcanoes of Lonquimay (2865m) and Tolhuaca (2806m), each of which involves a full-day ascent across scree, rock and snow. Then, in the nearby Conguillo National Park, we make the long snow-slope ascent of the decidedly active Volcan Llaima (3125m) and also have a day of hiking through native forest and across ancient lava flows to reach crystal clear Rainbow Lake. After transferring to the sporting, lakeside town of Pucon, we complete this great adventure by climbing Villarrica (2840m)and Choshuenco (2415m). With visits to several hot springs and a wealth of Mapuche Indian and Spanish Colonial historical interest, this is one of the finest hiking holidays in South America.

Trip Guide

This trip provides the opportunity to make a series of ascents of volcanic peaks in the beautiful Lake District of Chile. Between each climb we stay in comfortable hotels and lodges and we transfer between the peaks by road. In addition to the climbs this trip includes two full days and two half days of trekking in the national parks of the Lake District, as well as opportunities for relaxing in hot springs and mountain resorts. While none of the volcanoes we climb on this trip require technical mountaineering skills, group members should be confident walking on steep ground including scree slopes and snow slopes. In addition, the fairly high altitudes of these peaks(close to or in excess of 3000 metres (10,000 feet)means that these ascents will be physically challenging. Each of the 5 main volcano ascents will include at least 1000 metres (3300 feet) of ascent and descent and some of them rather more than this. For this reason, we have given this trip our DEMANDING grade.
