- Cross country with dogs
- The Iso Syöte National Park
- Skiing frozen lakes and rivers
- Staying in cosy cottages with sauna
- Luggage pulled on pulkas by huskies
This superb and unusual Nordic ski touring holiday takes us through the beautiful winter landscape of northern Finland on trails prepared by snowmobiles. Starting out at the village of Taivalkoski, we have a day to practise our skiing skills and a first chance to meet the husky teams, which accompany us on our journey and haul most of the group's equipment on pulkas. We then set off, skiing for around 20 kilometres on each of 4 days, traversing sparkling pine forest and crossing frozen lakes and rivers en route to the Iso Syöte National Park. Our overnight accommodation is in cosy forest lodges and cabins with saunas. Skiing with the huskies means we can travel light and cover more ground. Sometimes connected to the pulkas and dogs, skiers must be competent and experienced. Getting to know these 4-legged friends and helping to look after them is a unique experience and contributes greatly to the appeal of this ski touring adventure at the heart of Lapland.
Trip Guide
For the most part we will be following snowmobile trails which offer relatively straightforward skiing (though these are not cross-country ski trails)and we will be carrying only those things we need during each day. Participants should have previous experience of ski touring and be confident enough to be able to ski connected to a pulka and dogs for some stretches of the journey.
