Climb to the summit of Kilimanjaro with KE Adventure Travel Climb Kilimanjaro via the Rongai Route and Mawenzi Tarn

  • Climb Kilimanjaro via the Rongai Route
  • The quietest trekking route to climb to the top of Africa`s highest peak
  • Climb one of the worlds `7 Summits`
  • Rest day at lovely Mawenzi Tarn high on Kilimanjaro
  • Trek descent via the Marangu Route

Climb Kilimanjaro via the remote and relatively quiet Rongai Route.  Situated on the north side of Africa's highest mountain our trek starts close to the Tanzania / Kenya border. The Rongai Route is the longest and most scenic trekking route on Kilimanjaro, providing a gradual climb through forest, farmland and open moor, with expansive views northwards to Amboseli. As an aid to acclimatisation, our easy-paced itinerary includes a rest day at the idyllic Mawenzi Tarn Camp, beneath dramatic rock spires. An early start on the last day of our climb should enable us to reach the high point at Uhuru Peak (5894m / 19332ft) in time to see the summit snows illuminated by the golden light of sunrise. Kilimanjaro's prominence (it is one of the world's tallest freestanding mountains) and its lack of technical difficulty, make it an obvious challenge for regular hikers. This exceptional trekking adventure holiday offers the chance to climb kilimanjaro by way of its finest routes - the Rongai Route.

The Secret of our Success on Kilimanjaro
Success on Kilimanjaro is all about acclimatisation. At 5894 metres (19,340 feet) this is a mountain of Himalayan proportions, but without the opportunity to gradually acclimatise on a walk-in through a region of foothills. A poorly acclimatised person will not cope well with the Kilimanjaro climb and may even become quite ill during the ascent. We know that some companies offer an ascent of Kilimanjaro with just 6 days on the mountain. In our opinion, this at best risks your chance of reaching the highest point in Africa and, at worst, can threaten your health. KE's itinerary includes two nights at 4300 metes and an acclimatisation walk to 4500+ metres before climbing Kilimanjaro. This extra day will make all the difference to your chance of success and also to your enjoyment of the trip. On a 6-day ascent 5 or 6 people out of 10 will reach the summit, most of them having really struggled to get there. On a 7-day ascent with the extra night at Mawenzi Tarn, 9 out of 10 on average will make the summit.

Kilimanjaro Porter Assistance Project
We also make every effort to look after our local crews, who are, of course, fundamental to the success of our Kilimanjaro holidays. KE works with the Kilimanjaro Porter Assistance Project and, in recognition of the quality of care we provide for our local staff, we are listed as a partner on the International Mountain Explorers Connection website.

Trip Guide

Kilimanjaro is a big mountain and via the trek route that we have chosen to undertake involves around 4000 metres or 13,000 feet of ascent in just 5 days. Generally, there are excellent trails to follow, although on the upper part of the route we will have to negotiate some sections of loose scree. There will also be some snow and ice on the crater rim. The very long summit day on Kilimanjaro will provide a test for anyone, as much for the very long descent to the Horombo Camp as for the climb itself. This trip has been given the DEMANDING grade on account of the quite considerable height gain and because there are a couple of long trekking days.
