- Explore the 1000 year old city of Marrakech
This superb School Adventure starts with a day exploring the 1,000 year old city of Marrakech. The souks and mosques of this bustling city provide an incredible experience for all of the senses. We then travel beyond the Atlas Mountains amongst the palm-fringed oases of the Draa Valley. Here, we meet our Berber crew and their team of camels and set out on a 4-day trek on the edge of the great Sahara Desert. Travelling in the traditional way of the camel caravan, our route will take us across high sand dunes to isolated villages and rock ridge viewpoints. Sleeping out in the desert, meeting Saharan dwellers and hunting for fossils, this is an enchanting experience. We conclude our trip with an enchanting evening in Marrakech where the entertainment is still provided by jugglers, acrobats and story-tellers.
Educational perspective
The French language is widely understood in Morocco and generally provides the best means of communicating with people whose mother tongue might be Arabic or Tamazight (the Berber language).
Amend or Extend
Allow extra time for some hands-on work at one of the Juniper Trust's ongoing projects, or include a visit to peaceful, lakeside Pokhara, Nepal's second city.
Trip Guide
This trip involves walking for a maximum of 5 to 6 hours each day over a variety of terrain from hard rock to soft desert sand. All our camping and personal equipment is carried by camels so it is only necessary to carry a small daypack with daily essentials such as water bottle and camera. Winter daytime temperatures in the desert are not too hot and walking at this time of year should be quite comfortable. Each KE School Adventure is given a grade, taking into account the amount of walking involved, the difficulty of the terrain, the remoteness, the altitude and the length of the trip. The trips are graded on a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being the most challenging. This trip is graded 3.
