High in the Khumbu, close to Everest and closer still to the precipitous south face of Lhotse, the aptly named Island Peak (6189m) rises above a tangled knot of glaciated valleys. With its outrageous location and elegant summit ridge, this peak has been a favourite with KE leaders and clients for 2 decades. Trekking via Namche Bazaar and Thyangboche, we ascend to Kala Patar and enjoy some of the finest views of the world's highest peak. Then, after crossing the Khumbu Glacier and the Kongma La, we scramble to the summit of Pokalde (5806m), where the panorama includes 4 of the world's 8000 metre peaks. Descending to our basecamp beside the lake of Imja Tsho, we are ready for the ascent of Island Peak, which provides fine alpine climbing and a real sense of achievement. Combining a great trek and a rewarding climb, this is one of the best of all adventures to be had in Nepal.

Trip Guide
Generally, the underfoot conditions during the trekking element of the trip are relatively straightforward. The Khumbu is Nepal's most popular trekking destination and the trails are well used and present relatively easy walking conditions. It should be noted however that trekking at high altitude is of itself quite demanding. The climbs of Pokalde and Island Peak are not technically difficult but we will encounter a variety of terrain ranging from scree slopes and boulder fields to glaciated terrain where we will need to be roped together and steeper snow slopes where it will be necessary to use fixed lines to safeguard ascents and descents. Full instruction on the use of fixed lines and glacier crossing will be given during the trip and previous experience of these techniques is not a prerequisite. However, all participants should have previous experience of winter walking with crampons and should be competent in the use of an ice axe and should know how to self-arrest. , We have given this trip the overall grade of DEMANDING, and clients should be physically fit and prepared for the rigours of climbing above 5000 metres.
