An amazing trekking adventure holiday walking in the Acacus Mountains and Sahara of Libya. In the far south-west of Libya, deep within one of the wildest and most beautiful regions of the Sahara, the Acacus Mountains are characterised by magnificent rock formations, impressive canyons or wadis and gigantic sand dunes. This area of Libya is home to the Tuareg, the 'Blue People', veiled aristocrats of the Sahara whose nomadic way of life has changed little for centuries. For 5 days we will explore this dramatic landscape, walking with Tuareg guides and their camels and trekking between waterholes. Scrambling to rocky viewpoints and stopping off to explore amazing rock art sites, some of which date back 12,000 years will enhance our experiences in the Sahara of Libya. Camping out in the desert, this is the Sahara as you have always imagined it to be. On our return to the capital of Libya, Tripoli and the Mediterranean, this mouth-watering adventure trekking holiday concludes with an excursion to the peerless Roman city of Leptis Magna.
Trip Guide
The desert has ‘roads' of a sort, used by 4x4 vehicles to travel between major sights, but on this trip we will be off this beaten track, using camels to carry our equipment and following migration routes of the Tuareg Nomads. The under foot conditions will vary but apart from the occasional rocky scramble to reach a view point or soft sand when exploring the dunes, the tracks and trails we use are not difficult.. Because this is a short trip, and at low altitude, we have given it the MODERATE grade.
