This terrific family adventure holiday explores Ecuador on foot, on horseback and by mountain bike. We also take a ride on the autoferro or ‘little Andean train' across the dramatic ‘Awakening Valley'. Ecuador is known as the friendliest of all the Latin American countries and a big plus for any family visit is the opportunity to make new friends along the way. From Quito's mix of modern and ancient colonial styles to Otavalo's bustling Indian market, and from the snow covered slopes of Cotopaxi to a comfortable lodge in the Amazon jungle, this is a memorable adventure for both young and old! Ecuador is the smallest of the Andean countries and is the perfect setting for an exciting and varied family adventure. Sitting astride the equator it offers many distinct habitats, from high snow-capped volcanoes and Amazonian rain forest to tropical beaches and the unique Galapagos Islands. Combined, these very different landscape types create a country with one of the greatest varieties of flora and fauna on Earth. Lying at the northern extremity of the Andean Chain, much of Ecuador is at relatively high altitude, with the capital city of Quito being one of the highest capitals in the world, at 2890 metres (9500 feet). Ecuador is also one of the most volcanically active parts of the world and the country's most important mountains are all volcanoes. With its lush equatorial rain forest, together with a host of spectacular mountains, Ecuador offers almost endless possibilities for the adventurous family.
