- Hiking the trails of Santo Antao
- A great winter walking alternative
- From high rocky ridges to the sea
- Visit three islands
This alluring volcanic archipelago, lying off the coast of Senegal, has a subtle mix of landscapes and a rich culture that reflects its African location and Portuguese history. Arriving on the island of Sal, we fly on to Sao Vicente Island where a day of exploration includes the chance to hike the balcony trail to the lighthouse at Sao Pedro - white buildings, black cliffs and blue sea. We then take the early morning ferry to the beautiful and mountainous Santo Antao, our base for 4 contrasting days of walking. From our charming pension at the pretty fishing village of Ponto do Sol, we set out to discover the many exciting pathways of the islands. With its dramatic peaks, stunning coastal scenery, lush forest of pine and eucalyptus, steeply terraced farmland and colourful mountain villages, this is a paradise for hiking. Superb beaches and traditional food add to the appeal of this excellent new trip.
Trip Guide
We have set up this trip to make the most of the excellent walking on the island of Santo Antao. Typically, we will be following centuries old mule tracks that link the central altoplano (at around 1600 metres) to the coastal trails on the north of the island. Exploring green and irrigated valleys, pine woodland and subtropical forests, this is not a long or sustained trekking trip. We will walk for an average of around 4 or 5 hours on each of 5 days, returning each night to our comfortable accommodation. Participants will, of course, carry just a small day-sack during the walking. Neither long nor sustained, this is EASY trekking.
