Known as the ‘Land of Fire and Ice’, Iceland is a weird and wonderful destination for a School Adventure. The country’s finest trek, from the hot springs at Landmannalaugar to Porsmork, provides the basis of our unbeatable school group itinerary. Crossing the volcanic wilderness of the Fjallabak, by way of well-equipped campsites and with discreet vehicle support, this is 5 days of wonderfully diverse trekking in one of the most spectacular areas in the whole of Europe. Highlights include Mount Hekla, the Myrdalsjokull Icecap, beautiful Lake Alftavatn and the challenging final day of trekking over Fimmvorduhals Pass.
Educational perspective
Geothermal energy is never far from the surface in Iceland. It is used directly to provide cheap and sustainable power for the 250,000 inhabitants of the capital city of Reykjavik.
Amend or Extend
Include the ascent of volcanic Mount Hekla in your trip or take an excursion along the south coast to see the Glacier Lagoon at Jokulsarlon, scene of 2 James Bond films.
Trip Guide
We recommend a minimum age of 14 years
This is real wilderness travel, with the landscape changing dramatically each day. The trails will change from good paths to rocky scree, from sandy deserts to walking across the snow, from green valley pastures to windswept passes. There will be river crossings on most days and the weather can be very unpredictable. We will walk for on average 5 to 8 hours each day, with average climbs and descents of around 400 metres per day. The final day’s trekking is the most challenging with 1000 metres of ascent and descent. Suitable for school groups with hillwalking experience. Each KE School Adventure is given a grade, taking into account the amount of walking involved, the difficulty of the terrain, the remoteness, the altitude and the overall length of the trip. The trips are graded on a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being the most challenging. This trip is graded 5.
