- A School Adventure that combines ridge-walking, adventure and mediaeval history
- Superb trekking in the Julian Alps
- Stunning Valley of the Seven Lakes
- Biking and rafting day
- Medieval town of Skofja Loka
This excellent School Adventure starts out with 4 days of lightweight backpacking between well-equipped mountain huts at the heart of the Julian Alps. Following a high ridge above lush alpine valleys, the trek traverses several 2000 metre / 6600 feet peaks, en route to the beautiful 'valley of the 7 lakes', beneath the spectacular triplesummited Triglav (2864m / 9451ft). Then, from the pretty lakeside town of Bled, there is a change of transport, with mountain bikes and whitewater rafts combining to provide a day of adventure. The concluding day of guided sightseeing in Skofja Loka and Ljubljana highlights Slovenia's rich history.
Educational perspective
Formerly a part of Austria and later incorporated within Yugoslavia, Slovenia gained its independence as recently as 1992. Evidence of this varied history is reflected in the architecture of its towns and cities.
Amend or Extend
To see more of Slovenia, travel to the country's tiny Adriatic coastline, stopping off en route at the immense Skocjan Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Trip Guide
We recommend a minimum age of 14 years
This School Adventure starts out with a real mountain journey over 4 days, involving significant amounts of ascent and descent. The trails are predominantly good but there are sections of rocky ridgewalking. We will be walking for between 5 and 8 hours each day. For 3 nights we will stay in mountain huts which are inaccessible by vehicle and this means that group members will carry all of their personal equipment throughout the trip. The fact that this trip is not vehicle supported does have a big influence on the overall difficulty. However, it is important to remember that bedding is provided at the refuges and neither sleeping bag nor camping mattress needs to be carried. With careful planning, it should be possible to keep the weight of your sack down to 8 or 9 kgs. After the trek, there is a day of quite leisurely mountain biking and a short whitewater rafting trip. Each of our School Group Adventures is given a grade, taking into account the amount of walking involved, the difficulty of the terrain, the remoteness, the altitude and the overall length of the trip. The trips are graded on a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being the most challenging. This trip is graded 4.
Rafting
The Sava River provides exciting, but not outrageous, whitewater conditions. The river grade on the section that we run is nowhere more difficult than Grade 3. With professional guidance, it is perfectly suited to novices.
Rafting Safety: The safety of the group members is our number one concern. Our guides will give instruction in all aspects of rafting and river safety before embarking. Whilst there is an element of risk in every adventure, running rivers with KE should not be considered dangerous. We carry full safety and emergency gear and the contingency arrangements are well-established, should an emergency evacuation be required. Whilst we recommend that you can swim, even non swimmers can safely join this rafting trip. The high buoyancy life-jackets and helmets that group members wear, ensures that you have little chance of getting into trouble should you fall in.
