School Adventure - Stok Kangri & the Markha Valley

Book Trip
Schools Climbing Expedition to Stok Kangri - On the Summit! School Climbing Expedition - Cultural exchange in Markha Valley

  • Superb School Adventure trekking and straightforward climbing in Ladakh
  • Reach the top of a 6000 metre peak
  • Buddhist monasteries of the Indus Valley
  • Optional Community Project
  • A challenge for adventurous school groups

A challenging School Adventure for groups with appropriate mountain walking eperience, the Markha Valley trek can be extended to include the ascent of 6000 metre / 19,800 foot-high Stok Kangri. This striking peak, which dominates the southern skyline when viewed from Leh, offers a straightforward and objectively very safe ascent. The summit panorama stretches to K2 and the other big peaks of the Karakoram. This deservedly popular School Adventure expedition combines the special magic of Ladakh, with a great trek and a challenging Himalayan peak.

Educational perspective

Marmot, fox, bharal (blue sheep)and the amazing bearded vulture or lammergeier are commonly seen. Wolf and snow leopard are also present, but more elusive.

Amend or Extend

Returning to Delhi from Leh, one option is to include a visit to Agra and the magnificent Taj Mahal. This can be done without adding to the length of the trip.

Trip Guide

We recommend a minimum age of 16 years

After spending 4 days acclimatising to the altitude in Ladakh (3500 metres at Leh), during which time we will visit monasteries around Leh and also drive up to the Khardung La, the time that we actually spend on trek will be 13 days. Whilst trekking through the Markha Valley we will be following good trails, which are the main routes between the villages. The final 3 days of the approach to our basecamp traverse a more rugged area with less well-defined trails. This is not a particularly sustained trek and we have allowed plenty of time for resting and acclimatisation. Each KE School Adventure is given a grade, taking into account the amount of walking involved, the difficulty of the terrain, the remoteness, the altitude and the overall length of the trip. The trips are graded on a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being the most challenging. This trip is graded 9.
