Wonderful walking holiday adventure trekking stages of the GR10 in the eastern Pyrenees of France. From Les Angles in the district of Pyrenees Orientales, we start out by walking 2 stages of the GR10 via the superbly located Besines Refuge. Close to the Andorran border with France, this beautiful corner of the French Pyrenees is one of the least well-known and quietest parts of the entire Pyrenees range and perfect for trekking. We then make a short transfer eastwards to Planes and for the next 3 days the walking follows the GR10 as it approaches Pic Canigou (2784m / 9134ft), the last bastion of the Pyrenees, clearly visible from the Mediterranean coast. The challenging finale of our walking holiday is a trekking ascent of this great peak of the eastern Pyrenees from the Refuge de Mariailles.
Trip Guide
This is a reasonably challenging trek, mostly on good trails, but with some rougher terrain in places. We will cover approximately 16 kilometres (10 miles) each day, with lots of ascent and descent. We will be walking for around 5 hours each day and even regular hillwalkers will get a good workout. You will have access to your trek bag on the morning of Day 4 at Planes and on arrival at the Mariailles Refuge on Day 6. Otherwise this holiday is unsupported, which means that you will have to carry all of your personal equipment throughout the trip. However this is not a full back-packing holiday and, since sleeping bags and camping mats are not needed, you should be able to keep the packed weight of rucksack to around 8 kgs / 19 lbs.
