- An African wilderness trekking holiday for true adventurers
Extending north-south for some 110 kilometres (68 miles) and rising to over 5000 metres (16,400 feet), Uganda's impressive and rarely-visited Rwenzori range boasts arguably the finest high mountain trekking in all of Africa. Accompanied by Bakonjo porters, our tough circuit trek negotiates dense jungle, en route to the more open, alpine valleys above. Crossing 2 high passes and staying in scenically-located mountain huts, this is an extraordinary adventure and will provide a worthwhile challenge to any non-climbing group members. However, for those who have experience of scrambling and basic winter mountaineering, there is the chance to climb Mount Baker (4842m/15,887ft) and an option to reach the Margherita summit of Mount Stanley (5109m/16,762ft). Given clear conditions, the summit views from these relatively straightforward peaks are simply unforgettable. Recent KE groups in this remote corner of Africa have met just a handful of other trekkers. This is a genuine mountain wilderness experience in a country known as the ‘Pearl of Africa'.
Trip Guide
This brilliant trekking holiday takes in some of the most rugged and breathtakingly beautiful scenery imaginable. Although short, in terms of the absolute distances covered, this trek is not to be taken lightly. This is a remote area and the underfoot conditions are as difficult as any you are ever likely to find; dense jungle, deep mud, slippery tree roots and boulders are all par for the course and you should be prepared for this. There will be some quite long and taxing days of trekking. The optional climbing on mounts Stanley and Baker is technically easy, but the day-climbs on each of the peaks will be long. A degree of competence on rock scrambles and in the use of crampons and a single ice-axe is a requirement. Due to glacial retreat, there is now a short, steep wall at the foot of the final ridge on the Margherita summit of Mount Stanley that involves a couple of moves of entry-level rock climbing.
