- Trekking in the Drakensberg of South Africa
- Camp on top of the Amphitheatre
- See ancient Bushman rock art
- Safari game drives and wildlife tracking on foot
With its jagged peaks and rocky outcrops, the 200 kilometre escarpment of the Drakensberg is known by the Zulus as ‘uKhahlamba’ - barrier of spears. From our base at a comfortable bush-camp in the Northern Berg, we will explore some of the trekking options presented by this magnificent range. With a local guide, we will seek out ancient Bushman rock paintings and bivouac in a cave. Then, after trekking to the base of the 850 metre-high Thukela Falls, we will make the tough ascent to the summit of the Amphitheatre (3100m) and set up camp close to the lip of the falls. At dawn, we can expect to experience some of the finest Drakensberg views. Next, we will journey to the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve in the heart of Zululand, for 2 days of game drives and exciting wildlife tracking walks. A free day on the coast north of Durban rounds off this extraordinary trip.
Trip Guide
This trip starts out with a series of easy walks in the vicinity of the Sungubala Mountain Camp and also above the Mnweni Cultural Centre. We then have a longer walk to the base of the Thukela Falls, followed by a 2-day excursion to the summit of the Amphitheatre. The only potentially long day is Day 9, when we descend from the Amphitheatre all the way to Sungubala. The whole of the Drakensberg range is criss-crossed by paths and tracks and we will be following established routes with, for the most part, excellent underfoot conditions. Altitude is not a major factor in determining the difficulty of this trekking trip. During the 2-day trek at Mnweni, group members will be required to carry minimal personal equipment including their sleeping bags. On the 2-day Amphitheatre hike, there will be porters to carry the group's communal equipment, tents, food etc. and group members will need to carry just a light daypack.
