With an excellent record of winter snow cover, the north side of Bulgaria's Rila Mountains makes a brilliant snowshoeing destination. From a mountain lodge at around 1600 metres in the Guletchitza area, we make our first forays into this wintry landscape, climbing through forest to high passes and also making an ascent of Mount Maliovitza (2729m). Hiking across to the stunning Seven Lakes area and a new chalet base, we snowshoe up to the Skakavitza waterfalls and into the high and wild Valley of the Seven Lakes, a paradise of rugged rocks, towering peaks and frozen lakes. Taking a break after 5 days on snowshoes, we visit the world-famous Rila Monastery, even more impressive in winter - its distinctive red and white architecture framed against a backdrop of snow-clad mountains. A brief sightseeing tour of Sofia en route to the airport brings this superb winter adventure to a close.
Trip Guide
This holiday in Bulgaria covers a variety of ground from relatively easy snow covered trails to steeper mountain slopes. The itinerary will be flexible and during the week the guides will use their expertise and local knowledge to determine the best routes to take advantage of prevailing snow conditions and the abilities of the group. A suggested itinerary for the week is given below, but may be subject to change. It should be noted that in some snow conditions snowshoeing can be quite energetic and you should have a good level of cardiovascular fitness before coming on this trip. The trip is suitable for novices and also those people with previous snowshoeing experience. We will spend 3 nights in a mountain hut. You should be prepared to carry your personal belongings to the hut for these 3 nights. You will not need a sleeping bag or sheet sleeping bag as all bedding is provided.
