- An expedition into Egypt`s most enigmatic desert region
- Visit the `Cave of the Swimmers`
- Insight into the region`s geology and prehistory
- Incredible desert landscapes
- `Explore More` - the finest adventure holidays on the planet
This is an expedition into one of the Sahara's most isolated and least well-known regions, in the company of a specialist team who have previously run tours for scientific institutions such as the British Museum. Travelling in 4WD vehicles, we spend 12 days in the 'Western Desert', visiting the Great Sand Sea and the sandstone plateau of the Gilf Kebir. This remote region has long excited desert explorers and some of the Sahara's best rock art is found here, with new discoveries made every year. We will see the best of the sites, including the 'Cave of the Swimmers', as seen in the film - The English Patient. We will also marvel at the region's fantastically varied landscape, including spectacular rock formations, volcanic cones, meteor craters, towering dunes and fields of desert glass. An unmissable trip for desert devotees!
This trip is one of our ‘Explore More' range of outstanding adventure holidays which we are running in conjunction with our friends at Allibert and Hauser (France and Germany's leading adventure travel operators). The trips we have chosen for this range are undoubtedly some of the finest adventures on the planet. They are also ‘specialist' and will appeal to those who have ‘been there, done that' in many parts of the world and are now looking for something new. The cosmopolitan nature of the groups will be an important part of the Explore More experience!
Trip Guide
On this Egyptian trekking holiday we will be travelling into a remote desert world that has been crossed by nomadic people and their camels for generations. The area is accessible by 4WD vehicles and once we are beyond the tarmac road, we will be following some fairly well established dirt ‘roads', but also travelling across the open desert, with sand, gravel and bare rock under our tyres. We need to be self-supporting throughout the trip, as there are no points of resupply beyond Farafra. This is not a long or sustained trekking trip, but there will be the opportunity on many of the days to do some exploration on foot. Extremely, we might hike for 4 or 5 hours, including rocky scrambling and walking on soft sand. This is a remote and 'far out' trip, but it has only a modest amount of trekking and for this reason we have graded it at the lower end of MODERATE.
