  • A journey to the heart of the Bhutanese Kingdom

This excellent adventure holiday includes the chance to see many of Bhutan's most important towns and monasteries, as we journey to the beautiful region of Bumthang at the heart of the kingdom. From the lovely Paro Valley, with its spectacularly located Taktsang Monastery, we drive by way of Thimpu to the historic winter capital at Punakha. Then, at the charming village of Gantey in the Phobjikha Valley, we will be privileged to watch the rare and beautiful black-necked cranes at their winter feeding grounds. Travelling on to the town of Jakar we will visit the Jambay Lhakhang Tsechu  to witness the amazingly colourful dances and religious pageantry of one of Bhutan's most important festivals or 'tsechus' which is held each year over three day. We then set off on the sparkling 3-day 'Owl Trek' which takes us through pretty farmland and forested valleys to a high ridge in the foothills of the Himalaya, from where we have sensational views of snow-capped mountains.  This holiday offers a real insight into the cultural highlights and spectacular scenery of this magical kingdom.

Trip Guide

This is principaaly a touring and cultural trip with an element of trekking. The 3-day trek traces a route between villages and monasteries to the north of the town of Jakar. Following paths used by local villagers, the conditions are nowhere difficult. The altitude attained on the trip is not extreme and we should not encounter any snow. This route presents a great variety of landscape type; ranging from terraced farmland, through some of the finest mixed forest in the world, to open, alpine pastureland and scenic mountain passes. As a predominantly cultural holiday with a short trek at relatively modest altitude this trip merits its EASY grade. However, it is not suitable for those with no back-country or hill-walking experience at all.
