With its tropical rainforest, active volcanoes, deserted beaches, colourful wildlife, perfect climate and friendly people, Costa Rica is known as 'the jewel of Central America'. This amazing adventure begins in the Cordillera Central, with 2 days of scenic hiking on the volcanoes, Irazu (3432m) and Ojo de Agua. We then have a day's canyoning and a day's rafting on the beautiful Pacuare River. A boat ride then takes us to our lodge at Tortuguero on a protected stretch of Caribbean coast where turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. Heading inland, our next stop is at the famously beautiful Lake Arenal, where we can admire the pyrotechnic Volcan Arenal from the summit of the adjacent Cerro Chato. Hiking on cloud forest trails at Monteverde and on the volcanic slopes of Rincon de la Vieja will allow us to see lots of bird and animal species, before we round off this wonderful holiday with a day's R&R at Tamarindo on the Pacific coast.
Trip Guide
This adventure tour is designed to provide an insight into the many different elements which make up Costa Rica. It is not intended to be a long or continuous trekking trip. However, after a warm-up hike on the volcano Irazu, the trip does start out at moderate altitudes above sea level. You do need to be prepared for this and especially for the first day of this trek which involves a 2000m. / 6500ft. climb on steep forest trails. Once this is completed, the remainder of the holiday is more leisurely, with a number of short and longer walks and other adventurous activities, including one day of whitewater rafting.
