- Trekking and exploring in the Albanian Alps
- Views of Jezerca and the White Circle
- A mix of Mediterranean cultures provides the perfect walking holiday
- Rozafa Castle and the 'lock-in' tower of Thethi
- Trek through the remote Thethi National Park
In the far north of Albania, a range of rugged peaks rises to a high point at Jezerca (2694m) and is known locally as 'the accursed mountains'. Centred on the Thethi National Park, this is a remote, inaccessible and rarely-visited area, with a rich folklore and a wealth of predatory wildlife that includes wolf, bear and lynx. From the lakeside town of Shkodra, we journey to the village of Thethi, with its traditional wooden houses and impressive stone tower that sheltered the men-folk in times of blood feud. From here, we enjoy a mule-supported trek across high passes into the Kaprea and Valbona valleys, stopping off at the isolated villages of Rrogam and Kukaj which are home to just a handful of families. Staying in basic and newly established guesthouses, we will be treated to traditional food and hospitality. A ferry ride on the fjord-like Lake Koman is an integral part of our journey out of these enchanting mountains.
Trip Guide
This is a low-level trekking holiday (maximum elevation is below 2000 metres) with no camping. In addition, most of the days are quite short and we are always following well-established trails between valleys and villages that are suitable for mules and very straightforward for trekkers. Because this is a short trip at a generally easy pace, we have given it the MODERATE grade. You should ensure you are physically prepared for the trek and able to walk for approximately 6 hours each day and for several days continuously.
