  • Kilimanjaro to Ngorongoro Crater Mountain Biking
  • Camping under the big African sky
  • See the African Big Five: Elephant, lion, leopard, rhino and buffalo
  • Off-road cycling in the land of the Masai
  • Pioneering mountain bike holiday with an edge

A long-established and well-loved KE mountain bike adventure holiday, this trip cycles through parts of Tanzania that are definitely 'off the beaten track'. Starting out from Arusha on the south side of Kilimanjaro, we bike to our first camp at the Meserani Snake Park and ride an afternoon loop towards Mount Monduli. We then bike across the baobab-studded Masai Plains, crossing the Simanjiro Game Controlled Area, where we can expect to see antelope and possibly large predators, such as cheetah or even lion. Our wild hilltop camp here provides us with superb sunset views and the possibility of hearing elephants around our camp at night - all part of the Africa experience. Dropping down into the Rift Valley, we have the chance to visit fishing villages as we bike around the southern shores of Lake Manyara. From the lake, it is a challenging climb up to our camp at Aiche on the Rift Valley escarpment, followed by a final day's ride across country and through coffee plantations to the famous Ngorongoro Crater. Here, we can enjoy an unforgettable day's jeep safari amongst the abundant wildlife of this self-contained ecosystem. Yet another mountain bike route pioneered by KE, this is only made possible by superb 4WD back-up from our support team. An African mountain bike holiday with an edge to it - only for bikers with a true sense of adventure.

Trip Guide

SEMI-SLICK ADVENTURE. The East African plains, beneath Kilimanjaro are largely untouched by mountain bikers and provide us with a true adventure in every sense. The state of the roads cannot always be predicted and delays and diversions can be expected. The route folloes very rough jeep roads, which in some parts of the Masai Steppe are no more than faint tracks. Whilst not the most technical of our mountain bike holidays, there are fast sections with the occasional sand trap to keep you focused. There are few vehicles in this part of the world, but we do manage to provide vehicle support for 85% of the route. This holiday is graded as INTERMEDIATE. Intermediate trips are for regular bikers in search of adventure rides in remote locations. Several long days with climbs and descents, some at high altitude, will demand a reasonable level of fitness. A true sense of adventure is a prerequisite. The support vehicle is almost always on hand. Average 50 kilometres (31 miles) biking per day.
