Situated at the head of the beautiful Val d'Hérens in the Swiss Pennine Alps, Arolla is the perfect starting point for an Alpine introductory week. To make best use of the prevailing conditions, our Alpine trekking and climbing holiday will be flexible and will include overnight stays in several Alpine huts - the Cabane des Dix, the Vignettes Hut, the Rifugio Col Collon (Italy) and the Cabane de Bertol. The views from these outrageously located refuges are amongst the best in the Alps! Staying at high level throughout the week, we will explore lots of glaciated terrain and also climb a number of straightforward peaks, such as La Luette (3548m), the Pigne d'Arolla (3796m) and the Tete Blanche (3724m). With a mix of open snow slopes, crevassed sections of glacier and easy rock scrambling, there will be plenty of opportunity to practice crampon, ice axe and rope work during the course of this excellent mountain holiday.

Trip Guide

Graded DEMANDING, this is a hut-to-hut glacier trekking that includes a couple of easy summits. This is real mountain travel, including scrambling, snowslope climbing and glacier travel, where ropes, crampons and an ice-axe will be used. We average 6 to 8 hours walking each day, with some longer days and tough climbs. To comfortably complete this trip, you will need a good level of fitness and you should also have previous experience of walking with crampons. It is not necessary that you have previous experience on glaciers. There will be some time, especially on Day 3, for the guides to give some instruction in the proper use of an ice-axe and crampons, as well as the techniques used for walking roped together on a glacier. The etiquette of living in mountain refuges will also be well covered during this holiday.
