- The hidden secret of trekking in Turkey
Close to the Black Sea in north-eastern Turkey, the little-known Kackar Mountains provide excellent opportunities for a trekking holiday amongst granite peaks, remnant glaciers and richly forested lower valleys. Approaching the mountains from Erzurum, to the south, our hike leads through pretty villages, notable for their intact culture and for well-tended tea plantations, vineyards and citrus orchards. Climbing into the heart of the range, we will camp on grassy ridges, cross high passes and spend time beside mountain lakes such as Okuz and the deep blue Denizgolu (3300m). We will also be able to visit the impressive 1000 year-old Georgian church at Barhal (now a mosque) and meet the local shepherds at their rustic summer encampments on the highest pastures. As a climax to this wonderful trek, we will make the challenging 1000 metre ascent via a scant rocky trail to the top of Mount Kackar (3937m). If you are looking for a trekking holiday with something a bit different, this is pure Turkish delight!
Is this holiday for you?
The maximum altitude attained on this trekking holiday is not very high and our highest camps are below 3000 metres / 10,000 feet. This means that altitude acclimatisation is not usually a problem. However there are a couple of days with a good deal of ascent and descent and one or two of the days are quite long. For most of the trek we follow well-established trails between valleys and villages which are suitable for mules and very straightforward for trekkers. Because this is a short trip at a generally easy pace, we have given it the MODERATE grade. You should ensure you are physically prepared for the trek and able to walk for approximately 6 hours each day and for several days continuously.
