- The best of the 'Rainbow Nation'
- Dramatic Drakensberg views
- The 5-day Wild Coast trek
- Lesotho's rugged landscapes
This brand new and wide-ranging trip starts out with 2 nights in remote log cabins in the northern Drakensberg, with views across to the spectacular Amphitheatre. After a day's hiking to Bushman paintings and a vulture colony, we transfer to a 100 kilometre stretch of pristine coastline known as the 'Wild Coast'. Here, we complete a 5-day trek from Msikaba to Port St. Johns, amongst rolling hills dotted with traditional Xhosa villages and with lots of opportunity to enjoy the endless beaches and warm Indian Ocean. Our accommodation is in basic, eco-friendly lodges, jointly run by our South African agent and the local communities. Heading inland, we then drive via the Sani Pass into the tiny mountain kingdom of Lesotho. Crossing this landlocked and little-known country en route to Johannesburg, we overnight in Africa's highest inn, hike to isolated villages and climb to the high point of southern Africa at Thabana Ntlenyana (3482m). A splendid 2-week adventure!
Trip Guide
An excellent 2-week trip at a moderate grade encompassing the best of the varied scenery of South Africa's Wild Coast and Lesotho. Throughout the trip we stay in comfortable and pleasant accommodations, mostly with en-suite facilities, and in stunning locations. The trekking is not difficult and mostly follows established trails. During the coast walk the terrain will be undulating and will involve crossing sandy beaches and occasionally fording shallow streams. The ascent of Thabana-Ntlenyana though not technical will present a reasonable hiking challenge and during July August it is possible to encounter snow on this climb. Overall, the accent on this trip is of easy-paced trekking with between 3 and 6 hours hiking on the walking days. This leaves plenty of time for exploration of local villages, swimming or relaxing at our accommodation. We have given this trip the grade of MODERATE.
