Essaouira, Toubkal and Mgoun

Book Trip
Atlas Mountains, Mgoun and Toubkal Morocco Atlantic coastline

  • The best of southern Morocco
  • A challenging 2-week adventure
  • The charms of Essaouira and Taroudant
  • Ascend both Toubkal and Mgoun
  • Explore the delights of Marrakech

This magical and challenging 2-week taste of Morocco begins with a journey to the enchanting Bou Gemmez Valley, the starting point for a 5-day traverse of Mgoun (4068m), North Africa's second highest summit. Taking us up onto the high pastures of the Berber Shepherds and including the passage of the Mgoun Gorge, this trek reaches its conclusion amongst timeless villages on the south side of the Atlas. We then transfer, via the edge of the Sahara and the Tizi n'Test mountain pass, to Imlil, at the foot of Mount Toubkal (4167m), Morocco's highest peak. We have allowed 2 days for the summit attempt, sure to be the highpoint of the holiday!  Then heading to the Atlantic coast, a 3-day trek takes us north across the wild sand dune and rocky cape landscape to the laid-back port town of Essaouira.  Returning to Marrakech the following day, we have ample time to explore the maze of souks and reflect upon our experience of this colourful and friendly country.

We also offer some fantastic extensions which you can enjoy after your trek. Or if you wish to spend a few extra nights in the enchanting cities of Marrakech or Essaouira please see our Moroccan Riads.

Trip Guide

The maximum altitude attained on this trek is not great and we do not spend any nights above 3000 metres / 10,000 feet.  This means that altitude acclimatisation is not usually a problem. The summer months in the High Atlas can be hot with July and August particularly so. This does have an effect on trekking performance. For most of the trek we follow well-established trails between valleys and villages. The beach walking is flat or undulating through the dunes. On the ascent of Toubkal, the traverse of M'Goun and whilst trekking up to the passes on our route, we will encounter zig-zag trails on scree. In consideration of the sustained nature of the trekking on this trip we have given it the DEMANDING grade. You will need to ensure you are physically prepared for the trek. You should be comfortable with walking on good trails but with some steep ascents and descents, for up to 8 or 9 hours each day and for several days continuously.
