- A real Alaska adventure holiday
The focus of this sensational Alaskan adventure holiday experience is the stunning Mount McKinley (6194m), also known by its Athabascan Indian name of 'Denali'. Lying just a half-day drive north of Anchorage, our introduction to North America's highest peak is the excellent park service excursion to the Eielson Visitor Center. This provides us with fantastic mountain views and also gives us a first chance to spot the Alaskan 'Big Five' of moose, caribou, dall sheep, wolf and grizzly bear. Heading off into the wild, we then have 2 nights at an Austrian-style mountain hut beside Kroto Lake, before hiking and trekking for 2 days through bush and tundra to reach the Tokositna River - with views of the snowy bulk of McKinley throughout. Meeting up with our rafts (flown in to meet us), we make a 3-day descent of the river to Talkeetna, with wild riverside camping and lots of opportunities for wildlife spotting en route. This is the real Alaska !
Trip Guide
This is an Alaska adventure holiday at low altitude and involving just 4 days of trekking and there is not a lot of ascent or descent. Furthermore, there is only one of the trekking days that is long and arduous. However, underfoot conditions can be taxing, with boggy tundra and trackless scrubby terrain, contrasting with sections of dirt road. In addition, the area that we are accessing is pretty remote and this has influenced us to give the holiday a MODERATE grade. The 3 days of rafting are introductory level, the Tokositna River is swift-flowing, but smooth, with no real rapids. Buoyancy aids are provided.
