- Vilcanota luxury lodge trekking
- Machu Picchu, Cusco and the Sacred Valley
- The 6-day Camino del Apu Ausangate
- A culture trek with the alpaca herders of Chillca
- A journey at the unspoiled heart of the Andes
South-east of Cusco, some of the very best Andean trekking can be found amongst the high peaks and passes of the Cordillera Vilcanota. Here, in the shadow of sacred Ausangate (6384m), the people of the village of Chillca have been wholeheartedly involved in the setting up of a series of 4 stone-built Andean lodges or 'tambos'. Only recently completed, this is a unique and admirable project whose main purpose is to provide a sustainable way for outside visitors to experience the distinctive culture and pristine mountain landscapes of this beautiful and rarely visited corner of Peru. Situated at elevations of between 4300 and 4800 metres, these lodges provide comfortable twin room (en suite) accommodation, excellent facilities, good food and stunning views. Following a route known as the 'Camino del Apu Ausangate', we spend 6 days above Chillca, visiting isolated villages, hidden tarns and windswept cols such as Paso Palomani (5000m). En route, we are looked after by a local team who are proud to share with us their land and the spirit of this inspiring world. Their llamas carry our gear, whilst experienced cooks from the community prepare our food and local musicians provide traditional entertainment. During the first part of this super holiday, we enjoy an extended visit to Cusco and the Sacred Valley, staying in comfortable hotels and visiting all of the highlights, including Pisac, Ollantaytambo and Machu Picchu. Far from the mass tourism and complicated permit arrangements of the Inca Trail, this is the Peruvian Andes at its best.
Trip Guide
This trek offers a variety of trekking conditions from the easy, open meadows of the 'puna' to the scree slopes and scant zig-zag trails of the highest passes, at close to 5000 metres altitude. Most of the walking is on well-defined tracks and the trekking is quite straightforward and not very sustained. We begin the trip with 6 nights in Cusco and the Sacred Valley of the Incas, which means that the group should be well acclimatised before starting out on the 'Camino del Apu Ausangate'. Although trekking at high altitude does make extra physical demands, we have given this trip the MODERATE grade because it includes only a short trek and has no camping.
