Straddling Kirghizstan's border with Tajikistan, and dominating the ancient Silk Road from Samarkand to Kashgar, Peak Lenin (7134m) is considered to be one of the easiest of 7000 metre peaks. After a short internal flight from Bishkek to Osh, we drive south on the 'Pamir Highway' to our comfortable basecamp at Ashkik Tash on the lush pastures of the Altai Plain, where an initial day's rest and acclimatisation gives us the chance to meet hospitable Kirghiz herders at their yurt camps. Beginning our climb, we set up 3 camps on the mountain, with the highest at 6150 metres. Although the normal route is without significant difficulty (crossing sometimes glaciated slopes of up to 45 degrees inclination) this is a high peak and we will need all of the 2 weeks we have allowed, to give us a chance of reaching the summit. This is an opportunity to join an international expedition to a beautiful and very achievable 7000 metre objective!
This trip is one of our ‘Explore More' range of outstanding adventure holidays which we are running in conjunction with our friends at Allibert and Hauser (France and Germany's leading adventure travel operators). The trips we have chosen for this range are undoubtedly some of the finest adventures on the planet. They are also ‘specialist' and will appeal to those who have ‘been there, done that' in many parts of the world and are now looking for something new. The cosmopolitan nature of the groups will be an important part of the Explore More experience!
Trip Guide
This climbing holiday is an expedition to a very high mountain and as such is quite different in style to our other climbing trips to Himalayan or Andean 6000 metre peaks. The group will have a full support crew including a cook up to and while staying in Base Camp and Advance Base Camp. Above Advance Base Camp, the expedition members will be self-sufficient although we will have support for the movement of group equipment and supplies up to Camp 1 at 5400m. Directed by the guides, all members will take part in load carrying to establish Camp 2, and everyone will contribute to the various expedition chores above ABC (cooking, washing-up, rubbish disposal etc.). The route we use to climb Peak Lenin is not technical. There is a relatively steep (45º+) section of snow or ice between camps 1 and 2 which will be protected by fixed lines. Thereafter, the slopes are generally below 40º and the difficulties are those of glaciated terrain and high altitude. Climbing at these altitudes is extremely tiring and you will need to be in excellent physical condition. This climbing holiday is given our highest grade of STRENUOUS.
